Take it away Dave!
Dave was the proud owner of Dave’s Diner, a small but popular eatery in the heart of London. He loved cooking and serving his customers, who always praised his delicious dishes and friendly service. He had a loyal staff of four, who helped him run the place smoothly and efficiently.
Sound like you?
One day, he received a letter from the water authority, informing him that he had to install a grease trap in his kitchen, or face a hefty fine. Dave was puzzled. He had never heard of a grease trap before. What was it? Why did he need it? How much would it cost?
He decided to do some research online, and soon discovered that a grease trap was a device that intercepted fats, oils, and grease (FOG) from wastewater before they entered the drainage system. He learned that FOG could cause blockages, odours, and environmental damage, and that he was legally obliged to prevent them from entering the sewers. He also learned that there were different types and sizes of grease traps available, and that he had to choose one that suited his needs and budget.
He felt overwhelmed by the information and the options. He didn’t know which grease trap to buy, where to install it, or how to maintain it. He wished he could ignore the whole thing and carry on as usual, but he knew he couldn’t. He had to comply with the regulations and standards, or risk losing his business.
They say, if you can’t beat them, join them. Or, in this case, buy them. Because you have to. It’s the law. And you don’t want to mess with the law, do you?
But don’t worry, We will break it down for you. Firstly we call a grease trap a Fat Trap its in our name.
There are basically four things you need to consider when choosing a Fat Trap (see it makes sense calling it a Fat Trap): the capacity, the flow rate, the installation and the maintenance. Let’s explain what they mean, and why they matter.
The capacity is how much FOG the Fat Trap can hold before it needs to be emptied or cleaned. The bigger the capacity, the less often you have to empty or clean it. But the bigger the capacity, the more space it takes up, and the more it costs. So, you have to find a balance between convenience and cost. You don’t want to buy a Fat Trap that’s too small, because then you’ll have to empty or clean it every day, and that’s a hassle. But you don’t want to buy a Fat Trap that’s too big, because then you’ll waste money and space, and that’s a waste.
The water companies in your area may insist you install a certain size so it’s always worth checking with them to make sure you don’t install a Fat Trap which isn’t going to make you complaint, we can help with this, we are always happy to help.
The flow rate is how fast the grease trap can process the wastewater. The faster the flow rate, the more efficient the Fat Trap is. So, again, you have to find a balance between efficiency and cost. You don’t want to buy a grease trap that’s too slow, because then it will clog up and overflow, and that’s a disaster. But you don’t want to buy a grease trap that’s too fast, because then it will use up too much electricity and money, and that’s a waste.
The installation is where the Fat Trap will be located. There are two main options: under the sink or Outside. Each option has its pros and cons. Under the sink is the easiest and cheapest option, but it takes up valuable space that’s why we at FatTrap have developed the slim and super slim range. Outside is the most convenient and hygienic option, and if this is good for you and your business we offer the 304 stainless steel option to cope with the harsh outdoor environment.
The maintenance is the cleaning making sure it’s easy to access, empty, and clean the Fat Trap. The easier the maintenance, the better the Fat Trap works. And you can spend less time with the maintenance and more time running your business.
But don’t despair. There is hope. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. There is a way to make this easier. And that way is to ask for help. Yes, you heard me right. Ask for help. Don’t be shy.
